Wade Stays Cool

Now hold your horses and spurs Cowboy fans.  I’ve been hearing rumblings from down south, and from the rest of the country, calling for the expulsion of Wade Phillips.  I take exception to this for many reasons.  Playing for him in Buffalo for four years, I have firsthand experience of this quiet storm, the “smart silence” as I like to call his style.

This is the same coach who never had a losing season in Buffalo, but was sent packing. The same coach who has only one losing season (a 7-9 performance)  in his nine-year head coaching rap sheet.  Yes, this is who we are sending a Southwest Airlines, one-way ticket to, to coach the Los Angeles mysterious football team.

Let’s not forget that he bettered the Bill Parcells’ 9-7 team and turned them into 13-3 Super Bowl contenders.  The reason expectations are so high in Dallas is because of what Wade Phillips has done with this team in just one year!  If you don’t believe me, ask T.O. about the importance of Wade Phillips.

This scapegoat scenario reminds me of when my boys and I get into joking sessions while playing the dozens.  When we get stuck or somebody is getting the best of us, we single out the quietest of the gang and pick on him in hopes to rally favor.   Since Wade isn’t a rah-rah guy, he is always going to be subject to ‘dismissal talks’ when hot dog sales are down and when people stop unjustly blaming Jessica Simpson.

Dallas has run out of excuses.  We heard it all last year, including a singing girlfriend was ‘bad luck’ … how outrageous!  This year, after getting some good players with great Q-ratings … after filming a reality show during training camp … after letting T.O.’s tears not land on the ground, but rather in the playbook … after forcing Jason Garrett to force the ball to T.O. and abandoning the running game at times … after signing and babysitting Pacman until the red ghost finally caught him again (for you gamers out there) …  after hearing Jerry Jones, whom I love as an owner,  basically send a memo to all Cowboy affiliated that the regular season didn’t matter, but only wins in the playoffs … after all that, this team officially got ‘caught up’ in the hype.

And being caught up isn’t as drastic as it sounds, rather it’s subtle but its effect is tremendous.  The keen focus needed for all the little things that lead to success in the NFL has been undervalued by all these large issues that have blinded the Cowboys players.  This is also the biggest obstacle in communication and interaction between the coaches and players.  Unfortunately in Dallas, the owner, Jerry Jones, has loaded this gun that the world wants Wade Phillips to aim and shoot.

Do we not remember the effect of Tom Brady’s injury to the Pats?  Well, the same affect has grown true in Big ‘D.”  Romo’s pinkie pains effect more than just his throwing hand.  Therefore, until you get Neumann & Felix Jones back healthy, Roy Williams the DB is already lost for the year. And yes, injuries (along with the previously mentioned distractions) are to blame for the recent underperformance of these boys!  But, as Dallas has gone long on excuses and reasons for their playoff losses, and everything else that dulls the luster of the star, how about those 53 men take a look in the mirror? For once, let’s spread the proper share of blame with the owner who sips on the mint juleps or the horses in Dallas, but don’t place the entire blame on the quiet jockey, because truthfully, through this slump, he is just along for the ride.

Hee-Haw!!!

I think even with Romo the Cowboys would struggle…remember Romo gives up the ball every game…HIS nickname should be “TO”

The first thing i have to say is this, Jerry Jones has a need for flare, and that above all has gotten to the cowboys…Is there a reason why Deion, Michael, Emmitt, and Troy, all still call Jerry “Boss”, back in the day distractions were just the same, and a huge melting pot of egos called valley ranch home. The Cowboys still won, and won a lot, talk about a distraction, has any other team had there starting running back hold out, go 0-2 and win the super bowl. See Jerry was boss, and everybody knew jerry was boss, To often in this game players get blamed, to many times a decision made during a game by a coach costs a dub…i have gone through it from a players stand point, and a coaching stand point, as on offensive coordinator, and as a head coach. At the end of the day, on the NFL level, talent is not that far apart, it comes down to scheme, is there a coincidence that once wade started taking a more active role in the defense that they started shutting people down, and hitting people in the mouth…Everybody wants to blame contraversy, and chemistery, please athletes are paid to play, winning football games is not a seceret, look at what mike singeltary did in SF….Have an effective system, and scheme, get your players to buy in and execute, this game is an easy game, block and tackle, dont turn the ball over who ever does that the best will win…look at whos left this year, the block tackle and dont turn the ball over…there players have bought into the system, last year in big d there was an emphasis on getting TO involved, they moved him in motion across the formation, into the formation, out of the backfield, lined up at tight end, thats scheme, thats creating matchups in your favor, Dallas did none of that this year with any player, you trade for Roy Williams and don’t get him involved, that comes strait down to two people jason, and wade, My soloution is this, let jason take a head coaching job, ask wade to move to d coordinator, and pay mike shannahan more money than he’s worth, and give it a season, if TO dosent get involved, and is a so called distraction let him go, but Too often as a head coach, your biggest failure is not surronding your self with a great staff, one that buys in, and helps you block better tackle better and scheme better, that wins football games!!!
