Ana Ivanovic

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) was established in 1946 to provide food, clothes and health protection for children in post Second World War Europe.

UNICEF has a long tradition in Serbia – since 1947 when the first emergency shipment was sent to the former Yugoslavia. It has been active in the country for 60 years, including in the most difficult times in recent history, assisting in efforts to protect and promote children’s rights, to ensure that children’s basic needs and opportunities to reach their full human potentials are met.

Within its current Country Programme (2005 – 2009), UNICEF continues to be an important partner to the Governments of Serbia in its efforts to ensure that children and young people, in particular those who live in poverty and exclusion, enjoy and exercise their rights. UNICEF supports the reform processes and assists in efforts to combat poverty, harmonise legislation with the EU and international standards, achieve the Millennium Development Goals and implement the National Plans of Action for Children of the Government of Serbia. NGOs are supported and strengthened, and close cooperation has been established with the private sector.

UNICEF engages well-known personalities who volunteer their time and talents to promote children’s rights and UNICEF’s mission – to build a world fit for children.

Human development begins with the realisation, promotion and protection of children’s rights!

ABOUT ANA IVANOVIC – UNICEF NATIONAL AMBASSADOR FOR SERBIA
Ana Ivanovic, the world No. 6 tennis player, has been inaugurated on September 14, 2007 a UNICEF National Ambassador for Serbia at an official ceremony in Belgrade-based primary school “Vladimir Rolovic”. The newly appointed Ambassador has donated funds for the “School without Violence” Programme, which will enable three additional schools in Serbia to begin to implement this programme.

“This is a great honour for me to be invited to be UNICEF Ambassador”, said Ana. “I love children, and I relish this opportunity to help them in some small way. I’m looking forward to supporting UNICEF’s ‘child-friendly schools’ concept. Serbia is already on a good way in this respect thanks to UNICEF's activities. I will give my contribution and hope that it will add up to the positive changes that are occurring for children in Serbia."

As UNICEF Ambassador, Ana Ivanovic will use her name and fame to advocate for the full realisation of child rights in Serbia, especially in the areas of education and child protection.

“We are happy that Ms. Ana Ivanovic, the world-famous and loved tennis player, has joined the UNICEF family by accepting to perform for us the voluntary position of a National Ambassador”, said Ms. Maria-Luisa Fornara, UNICEF Acting Representative in Serbia. “She has thus demonstrated her firm commitment to promote the rights of all children through the power and potential of sport and to further UNICEF’s mission in building Serbia fit for children.”
