Coach Smith has always been very active in the community. The Tubby Smith Foundation, which he established to assist underprivileged children, has raised over $1.5 million in the past five years. Tubby’s Clubhouses revitalized community centers throughout Lexington by providing computers and training to hundreds of school-age children.
In the summer of 2001, the United Way created a new award – The Donna and Tubby Smith Community Spirit Award. The Smith’s were the inaugural recipient of the award for their generous contributions. In 2001, their $125,000 donation made them the highest individual contributor to the United Way in the stat of Kentucky. The award is given annually to those who effectively advance mobilization or collaboration to achieve positive impact that benefits the Central Kentucky community at-large.
Shortly after accepting the job as head basketball coach at Kentucky, Tubby Smith started a foundation to assist underprivileged children. He has since conducted annual auctions, golf tournaments and other events while also accepting donations from companies and corporations throughout the Bluegrass. Now in its ninth year, the Foundation has donated over $2.3 million to over 100 charities.
In January 2004, the foundation teamed with Dell computers, along with several area businesses, to develop “Tubby’s Clubhouses.” The clubhouses hold refurbished Dell computers at community centers to serve at risk middle school students through a 40-hour afterschool program. Students are given computer training in an effort to help children succeed with increased life kills. There are currently seven Clubhouses in Lexington, one in Northern Kentucky and one soon to open in Owensboro. Tubby’s Clubhouse have graduated over 600 young people since its inception. Smith plans on developing Tubby’s Clubhouses in the Twin Cities metro area in the future.
