The Jason Terry Foundation is a youth based organization, focused on helping others obtain dreams (H.O.O.D.), through education, self-empowerment, and community involvement.
ABOUT
Jason Terry has been giving back to communities across the country through The Jason Terry Foundation, founded in 2000. The primary focus of the foundation is to provide inner city youths the opportunity to further their education beyond high school.
The theme of the foundation is (H.O.O.D.) the acronym for Helping Others Obtain Their Dreams. Jason the product of a household of 10 children in Seattle, and now himself the father of four girls, has a passion for working with children and helping them to be the best they can be in all they do. It is his goal to show children that dreams do come true if you work hard and stay focused on your goals.
For the second year, he has donated $100 dollars for each of the three point goals he made with his NBA Dallas Mavericks team to Gilda's Club of North Texas, an organization providing a free nonresidential meeting place for cancer patients their families and supporters. This year he made 164 three pointers and donated $16,400 from his foundation. Each year his donation is matched by the Credit Union of Texas and an anonymous donor bringing the total donation for the 2006-2007 season to Gilda's Club to nearly $50,000. He donated $17,100 for the 2005-2006 season. Gilda's Club has named him a "Most Valuable Player" for his generous contributions.
In addition to the thousands of dollars raised through his two year UNCF All Star Hoops Showdown Celebrity Basketball Tournament at Phillips Arena, including a personal donation of $25,000, the foundation holds annual camps for boys and girls in multiple cities and has contributed a computer lab at South Shore Community Center in Jason's hometown of Seattle. Summer basketball camps are held annually in Tucson, the home of his almer mater the University of Arizona and will be held again this year in Seattle at Franklin High School where his jersey was retired in February. He has also held his camp in Atlanta at Clark Atlanta University Gymnasium.
At Christmas time in 2003, Jason put smiles on the faces of children at Atlanta's Hughes Spalding Children's Hospital when he visited with teammates bringing toys provided by the Jason Terry Foundation. That same year the foundation donated teddy bears and Jason's team jerseys to the Marine Corp Toys For Tots campaign.
Because of all of his outstanding community work in 2003, The NBA awarded him the July Community Assist Award and he received a $5,000 donation from the NBA to the charity of his choice.
In addition Jason's foundation has hosted a Reading Timeout for the children of the Atlanta Hawks/ Thomasville Heights Reading & Learning Center, took part in the Thomasville Summer Camp closing ceremonies, presenting awards to reading contest winners and conducted free basketball clinics for several Boys & Girls Clubs at the Whole Foods Market in Roswell, a suburb of Atlanta. He was also presented with the Frank Ski Foundation Athlete of the Year Award for his philanthropic efforts throughout the Atlanta-area community.
