Life is a team sport
Rick Hendrick is best known for his NASCAR championships and Nextel Cup Series victories as the owner of Hendrick Motorsports. In 1996, his winning ways broadened beyond the Winner’s Circle when he became a champion for people facing life-threatening diseases that can be treated with a bone marrow transplant.
That was the year the popular NASCAR team owner became a leukemia survivor.
After his 1996 leukemia diagnosis, Hendrick quickly realized the urgent need for more donors on the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry. He decided to use his diagnosis and make a difference in the lives of others.
Today, the Hendrick Marrow Program helps secure private resources to support the NMDP’s critical work.
Since 1997, the Hendrick Marrow Program has raised more than $7 million to recruit donors and help patients pay for transplant-related costs. These funds have:
*Added more than 85,000 volunteers to the NMDP Registry
*Helped more than 3,000 patients with transplant-related costs such as lodging and post-transplant prescriptions
