Football great Doug Flutie brings “The Flutie Brothers Band” to Fort Lauderdale Beach, this weekend at the historic Ocean Manor. Charity event will raise awareness and funds

Fort Lauderdale, FL  (June, 12, 2009) Football legend and Hall of Famer Doug Flutie and his brother Darren will be generating a new field of excitement as they make their way to the historic Ocean Manor Resort on the Galt Ocean Mile tonight and tomorrow as featured musical performers. The shows will be held in the 11 floor penthouse that boast spectacular oceanside and city views with wrap a around outdoor terrace. Tonight’s show begins at 7:30P.M. with Saturdays starting at 9:30P.M. Proceeds from the event and all silent auction revenue will go directly to the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. The organization has raised over 10 million for autism since its inception less than a decade ago.

John Day, whose popularity for years attributed to the allure of Fort Lauderdale Beach will have a special performance to open the show. Comedian Gene Merola another area legend will take the stage doing what he does best. The show will be co hosted by Miss America 2008 TOC, Becky Willard with venerated Actor Dennis Cole (“Charlie’s Angels,” “The Love Boat,” “Murder She Wrote,” “The Young and the Restless” and “Baywatch”).  Several special guest appearances are also part of the evening’s presentation.

The Flutie Brothers Band consist of Doug Flutie on drums, with brother Darren on guitar alongside a group of accomplished musicians hailing from the Boston and New York area. The group performs classic rock hits of the 70’s and 80’s from such artists as Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Boston, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Rod Stewart, to name a few.

In 2006 Doug was crowned the NFL’s best musician for his appearances with the Barenaked Ladies group on Monday Night Football which earned him a spot in the halftime show of the Pro-Bowl. Subsequently Playing the VIP lounge at the last three Super Bowls and a recent Howard Stern Show.

The Flutie Brothers Band began over a decade ago as a way to blow off steam in the off-season for Doug and Darren.  Music was always a part of their lives since they were kids. Their father led big bands and always had music playing or bands rehearsing in the house while they were growing up.

They turned this love for music into a hobby that has enabled them to play all over the U.S. and Canada and share the stage with some of their musical heroes as well as raise money and awareness for the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, in honor of his son who has the infliction.  Flutie also created a cereal, Flutie Flakes, with the benefits going toward the organization. The Flutie Brothers have Recorded 2 full-length albums, as well as writing and recording the Saturday Night Football theme song for the Canadian Football League, which is featured weekly on The Canadian Broadcast Company.

ABOUT DOUG FLUTIE: Doug Flutie rose to prominence during his career at Boston College, where he received the prestigious Heisman Trophy and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award in 1984. His “Hail Mary” touchdown pass in a game against the Miami Hurricanes on November 23, 1984 (dubbed “Hail Flutie”) is considered among the greatest moments in American sports history.

Flutie signed with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League in 1990, and in 1991, threw for a record 6,619 yards. He played briefly with Darren, a wide receiver, before being traded to the Calgary Stampeders, whom he led to victory in the 1992 Grey Cup.  In 1994, he threw a record 48 touchdown passes.  Flutie played for the Stampeders until 1996, when he signed with the Toronto Argonauts, leading them to back-to-back Grey Cup victories in 1996 and 1997.  Flutie was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player a record six times, and was named the MVP in all three of his Grey Cup victories. He returned to the NFL in 1998 with the Buffalo Bills, where he earned Pro Bowl and NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors. He played for the San Diego Chargers from 2001 to 2004, and finished his career as a member of the 2005 Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots.

In 2006, he was ranked #1 in a list of the top 50 Canadian Football League players of all-time.  On May 8, 2007, Flutie was elected to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, becoming the first non-Canadian inductee. That same year he was named to the College Football Hall of Fame.  Darren followed in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and is ranked among the top 50 players on the all-time list. Doug is currently a college football analyst for ABC and ESPN TV networks.

Silen auction items and show raffles include, a classic MGB Roadster valued between $12,000 – $14,000, a plethora of significant artwork including, a Chagall annotated pen with the inscription “Bonne Anne 1968 de nous deux.” Vava was the wife of artist – estimated value $2,400, antique Last Supper print valued at $2,500, Print Roth’s Angels 1/20 singed by late artist wife $4,000, Henri Rousseau The Waterfall Print (Art Institute Chicago), $1,000 Andrew Wythe Print Hristina’s World (MOMA) $800, a stay at the Ocean Manor Resort Penthouse $2,000, a Schwinn tandem bicycle $2,000, “Harley Chopper” bicycle $1,000, Doug Flutie jerseys, restaurant certificates among numerous others.  Over $50,000 in market value will be auctioned this weekend with 100 percent going to the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism.

Doug Flutie will personally hand the keys over to the highest bidder of the classic sports car on Monday morning at the Ocean Manor Resort.

Tickets for Friday and Saturday shows are $20, $55, $75 and $125 (VIP tables). A splendid buffet will be served. Fridays show starts at 7:30P.M. with a 9:30P.M. show start Saturday.
