The Southern California Olympian chapter is the largest and the oldest organization of Olympic athletes in the US. Originally dating back to 1919, with a current membership of approximately 800 athletes, the membership includes areas south of Fresno to the Mexican border.
The current Southern California Olympians was founded on March 19, 1949 with Fred Kelly of Orange, being the first President. Since that time the SCO has sought to perpetuate Southern California's outstanding Olympic heritage which dates back to 1904.
Since 1912, the Southern California Olympians have continually supplied the largest percentage of athletes that comprise the US Olympic Team.
The Southern California Olympians (SCO) help fund the dreams of future Olympians, coordinate member appearances at youth, community and corporate events, offer fellowship to members of past and current Olympic teams, and support the creation of an active, visible worldwide Olympian organization.
More than 800 Olympians and Paralympians from past and present Olympic Teams who live and work in Southern California draw upon their athletic experiences to inspire and pass on Olympic ideals to our communities and to enrich the lives of the youth of Southern California.
The SCO holds bi-monthly telephonic board meetings, stages a Welcome Home Dinner for Olympians after each summer Olympic Games, provides speakers to local community groups, participates in celebrity golf tournaments and provides grants to Olympic hopefuls and participates in the Ready Set Gold Program which places 50 Olympians in 50 elementary, middle and high schools in LA Unified School District to mentor and visit the school regarding fitness and the fitnessgram 5 times per school year.
