Chicago Bear Greg Olsen takes a time out from his on-the-field job to launch Receptions for Research, a non-profit organization committed to raising funds for various types of cancer research. Receptions for Research believes everyone deserves a second chance at life therefore the goal is to provide hospitals, doctors and researchers the necessary and most updated resources to save those who have been diagnosed with cancer.
The inspiration for Receptions for Research began when Olsen, a high school junior, witnessed first-hand the dreadful effects of disease through his mother’s battle with breast cancer. During this time, Olsen watched his mother face cancer head-on while continuing to raise a family and never once missing a home football game for him or his two brothers. It was her strength and determination that has become an overwhelming influence in Olsen’s life, helping him become the person he is today.
Observing breast cancer and the harsh effects on his mother were quite difficult, however Olsen later realized it was because of her persistence and refusal to give in, coupled with modern medicines and technology, that his mother was able to conquer cancer and remains cancer free. Olsen views her victory as truly inspirational and wants other mothers, children and families to know that they, too, can have a fighting chance against cancer.
“It is imperative that we continue to hone the research we use to fight such devastating diseases such as breast cancer, so that we can protect those we cherish most in our lives” explains Olsen.
