Founded by the Red Sox third baseman, Gold Glove winner, World Series MVP and cancer survivor, the Mike Lowell Foundation is a 501c3 charity whose mission is to support low income families in Miami and Boston struggling with cancer. The foundation also supports youth baseball programs for inner city children.
Launched in 2001 by Mike and his wife Bertica, when Mike was a member of the Florida Marlins, the Foundation worked with friends, fans and sponsors in Florida to raise much needed funds through golf tournaments, corporate appearances, galas, casino nights and other special events. Grants from the Mike Lowell Foundation principally supported Miami-based charities including the League Against Cancer, Miami Children's Hospital, and recreation and educational programs at local schools as well as the national Teammates for Kids Foundation. Since being traded to the Red Sox in 2006, Lowell and his wife have expanded the scope of the Foundation's work to include Boston-based charities.
