The Chevrolet Centre with local support from Youngstown State University, The Frangos Group, and the Skating Club of Greater Youngstown announced that The Cleveland Pops Orchestra, along with singer and songwriter Peter Cetera, will headline a special evening of entertainment that mixes music and ice skating in Smucker's presents Hot Ice, Cool Sounds, set for October 18th in Youngstown's Chevrolet Centre at 7:30 pm. Tickets for this event will go on sale August 1. The historic event will be taped and later broadcast nationally on Christmas Day on NBC, providing a spotlight for Youngstown and its surrounding communities. "This event will give the City of Youngstown, the Mahoning Valley and Youngstown State University the national spotlight that it so richly deserves," says Executive Director Eric Ryan. This magical musical night is a one- time only event featuring a star-studded list of Olympic, World and National Champion figure skaters. "This is probably the strongest skating cast that I have ever put together for one of my NBC skating entertainment special" says Steve Disson, the show's executive producer of Disson Skating. Skaters confirmed for the one-time collaboration include Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen, Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano, six-time U.S. champion Todd Eldredge, world champion Yuka Sato, three-time U.S. champion Michael Weiss, world ice dancing champion Shae-Lynn Bourne, six-time Canadian champion Jennifer Robinson, Olympic pairs champions Jamie Sale and David Pelletier and two-time world silver medalist dancing champions Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon. The Cleveland Pops Orchestra entertains thousands of fans with its wide variety of musical concerts. The Cleveland Pops, led by Carl Topilow, performs everything from sports themes to Frank Sinatra to Barry Manilow to music from Disney. Never before has an orchestra played for a nationally televised ice skating event of this caliber. Peter Cetera is perhaps best known as one of the original members of the rock band, Chicago. Among his No. 1 hits are "Glory of Love,'' which was the theme song to the movie, "Karate Kid II,'' "The Next Time I Fall,'' a Grammy Award-nominated love ballad he performed with Amy Grant and "Restless Heart.'' The boys from Jersey have sold over 100 million records throughout their career. They are widely recognized for the piercing falsetto of Frankie Valli and continue to have their songs covered by bands all over the nation. MISSION To date, the Michael Weiss Foundation (MWF) has raised over $100,000 for deserving applicants who possess Olympic potential in the sport of Figure Skating. The MWF will continue to provide Olympic eligible United States figure skaters with financial support to assist in all facets of training and competition with an emphasis on continuing their education. Training as an Olympic hopeful can include expenses associated with coaching, choreography, costumes, music selection/editing, educational costs and tutoring and total up to $65,000 per year. Annual Scholarships are awarded every December to skaters who are having trouble meeting their financial needs. THE FOUNDATION Headed by Two-time Olympian and three-time United States National skating champion, Michael Weiss, his wife and choreographer, Lisa Thornton Weiss, and Michael’s mother – Collegiate Gymnastic Champion, Marjorie Weiss, the organization was created to address the issue of the high cost of figure skating and the lack of financial support currently available for promising skaters. “I know when I was an up and coming athlete; being recognized for my accomplishments and encouraged through financial support inspired me as a young skater to work harder and increased my determination to succeed. It has been a dream of mine to inspire and support young skaters, and this is a way that I can help the future of figure skating.” - Michael Weiss PROJECT OVERVIEW To provide financial support to Olympic hopefuls who may not otherwise be able to pursue their figure skating goals. Recipients will be awarded scholarships based on skill level, financial need, and competitive potential/desire with an emphasis on the importance of continuing their education. PROJECT OBJECTIVES The Michael Weiss Foundation will create scholarship funds through supporting organizations, individuals and various foundation promotions to help provide the necessary funds in the pursuit of athletic excellence, to strengthen the base of the next generation of United States figure skaters and afford deserving young athletes the best opportunity for potential success at the Winter Olympic Games CRITERIA FOR MWF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS: The MWFoundation will determine the scholarship winners based on the following criteria: *financial need = family’s income level must be below $150k per year *the individual merits of the skater *applicant must be under the age of 18 *eligibility status and level of skater *young athlete showing exceptional potential – Olympic potential *young athlete who is competing well at their level *special circumstances |
