Description Dear Friends, The Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield has a new home for 2008! I am pleased to announce our new venue and partner, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, and I look forward to carrying on our tradition of exclusive client entertainment and high-end golf at this beautiful location, June 25-26, 2008. Nemacolin offers a Pete Dye designed Mystic Rock Golf Course and other exciting opportunities that have allowed us to upgrade and expand our sponsorship packages. Overnight accommodations and spending credits for golfers are now included in most packages (see page 4), and sponsors are encouraged to bring spouses, families and friends to enjoy all that Nemacolin has to offer. The event will remain closed to the public; golf will be strictly Pro-Am participants and their celebrity hosts. Description OUR MISSION To educate, encourage and assist athletes in their efforts to contribute to community and charitable causes, to increase public awareness of those efforts, and to inspire others to do the same. OUR PURPOSE Educate Athletes, with the proper information and tools, can make a tremendous positive impact on the charitable community. By connecting with professional athletes and teaching them about their philanthropic options, we will equip them with the tools to effectively give back to their community, educate their peers, and inspire many others to support charitable causes. Connect Athletes for Hope will connect athletes, charities, businesses, and individuals to create a movement for positive change. Many athletes have strong philanthropic objectives, yet do not know how to identify and get involved with organizations that best suit those objectives; likewise, many charities do not know how to utilize an athlete's time efficiently to best serve their objectives. AFH will match athletes' philanthropic goals with the needs of charities. Many corporations want to enhance their philanthropic efforts by partnering with the professional athlete community. AFH will help businesses design effective charitable activities and programs that involve athletes. There is also a special bond between athletes and their fans, and AFH will build upon that connection to inspire millions of people to follow the lead of athletes in a philanthropic movement. Recognize We value the hard work and contributions that professional athletes make to the charitable world, and we believe it is important to recognize these efforts. Description The Mario Lemieux Foundation was created in 1993 by hockey legend Mario Lemieux. In that year, Mario was enjoying the greatest season of his brilliant career and on pace to establish a new NHL scoring record. Then he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease. After a successful battle with Hodgkin's, Mario is now twelve years cancer free and his experience led him to focus on ways to assist those not so fortunate. He devotes much of his time to the Foundation raising funds to help reach the ultimate goal: a cure for cancer. The main objective of the Mario Lemieux Foundation is to fund promising medical research projects being conducted by talented scientists. Among the donations made by the Foundation was a five million dollar gift to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to establish the Mario Lemieux Centers for Patient Care and Research in 2001 and a two million dollar gift to the Children's Home of Pittsburgh in 2005. The Mario Lemieux Foundation has also established the Austin Lemieux Neonatal Research Project, in honor of Mario and Nathalie Lemieux's healthy son who was born prematurely. This grant supports research at Magee-Womens Hospital, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in their Division of Neonatology and Developmental Biology. Additionally, the Lemieux Foundation supports other organizations such as the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the Leukemia Society, the Lupus Foundation and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. The Mellon Mario Lemieux Celebrity Invitational and its attendant gala events serve as the largest fundraising vehicle for the Mario Lemieux Foundation. After eight successful years of a four-day celebrity tournament that featured galleries of as many as 60,000 spectators, the 2006 event was held at Laurel Valley Golf Club and was closed to the public in an effort to maximize the level of corporate entertainment for our continued sponsors and supporters. The 2007 event is currently being planned. If you are interested in participating, please contact the Foundation office as soon as possible, as golf groups are in high demand.
