Robert Porcher

The Porcher Cancer Relief Fund was established in 2001. Monies are raised through special events, general contributions, contributions in memory or honor of, and special funds. The mission of the Porcher Cancer Relief Fund is to ease the financial burden placed on families whose children are being treated for cancer at University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMCCC).

MISSION
To ease the financial burden placed on families whose children are being treated for cancer at University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMCCC).

BACKGROUND
The UMCCC is a national leader in patient care, cancer research and education. The UMCCC has 235 clinicians and researchers, 9 multidisciplinary and 23 specialized cancer care clinics, and has been designated one of only 27 Comprehensive Cancer Centers by the National Cancer Institute, which also recently awarded it an “outstanding” rating. U.S. News and World Report currently ranks The University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center in the top ten among all Cancer Centers in the country. The UMCCC Administrator is responsible for carrying out the intended purpose of the fund. The UMCCC notifies both the University Cancer Foundation and the Porchers twice a year of the uses of the fund, including a general description of the reasons for dispersal, number of families served and total dollars dispersed.

The cancer relief fund is distributed to families demonstrating considerable hardship and great economic challenges while seeking treatment at the UMCCC. A significant number of families reside in Michigan and receive the majority of the financial assistance, however the UMCCC treats children and families across the world and the fund is not limited to families residing in Michigan. The fund includes people of any socio-economic status, race, ethnicity and gender. It specifically addresses the families of CHILDREN (ages 0-18) who have cancer. The fund is used for such things as patient and family meals, lodging, transportation and medications. In addition, the fund covers other expenses related to the basic needs such as household bills, childcare expenses, etc. Finally, the fund is used to cover unexpected medical expenses related to the treatment process such as wigs, prosthesis, etc.
