Open Bar

Please don’t let the title fool you … This is not an open invitation to meet me at the local tavern and all drinks are on me! (Where’s my black card?) No, this is my attempt to have peace and mind at my local Cheers by answering all the fans of football questions BEFORE I get my ticket from the valet parking to have a little peace and calm while I’m hanging out.

So ask me on www.prolebrity.com. (por favor)

So here are the rules: ask me any question you want about the game of football (we’ll call that “On Turf”) or any question about the world of athletics (we’ll call that “On Earth”) and I will answer as many questions as possible … (and tell your friends).

So write in with anything and check out my response. Be prepared!!!

Dat Dude

Whats good man! Again, I am digging the website. Also good to see you doing your thing after football. My question is, as an athlete obviously you have to be in top shape to compete, and to prevent injuries. I am on a football regiment, as far as working out, but my ‘Achilles Heel’ I guess you can say is running. Endurance running specifically. I remember from my H.S. football days the coach didnt really stress endurance running, he expected us to have good stamina coming in to training camp. So the actual question is, I have Shin-Splints, and they are killing me. Have you had them in your training, and what its the best way of overcoming them. Also, any techniques in endurance running that you know of… I swear i am trying to run the whole Rose Bowl here in Pasadena without stopping. seems impossible right now, but then I see a 4′11 woman doing it like its no problem. Whats the deal?

    Juspeezy,
every scenario you have described i have went through….let me try and chop through this tree with you….endurance training is necessary for football but it must be sport-specific. So no need to run the mile in 4 minutes in order to play football. You need a strong anaerobic base, which means, short-long intervals of running. Remember the longest play in football is 100 yards, and MOST are only 4 yards. So on average you run 10-20 yards max per play. Train for that distance. 400 meters is the longest you need to run, the rest is for ego because it isn’t applicable.
As for Shin-Splints, that usually comes from running on too many different surfaces or from worn, old shoes. You need great support on your shoes and don’t jump from grass, to dirt, to concrete, to asphalt. The body reacts adversely to that.
Lastly, women are naturally in better aerobic shape than men. They are more flexible, have a higher pain tolerance and can run longer distances. It’s just fact in my mind. That’s why she is killing you, because you are trying to do aerobic training which is long distance at a moderate pace. Try anaerobic training, short distances at extreme pace and i think you might have a fighting chance…actually, you should win!
    haha

Tell your friends to write in with questions…i look forward to it

Dude, lovin’ your work on NFL Live! You’re way better than Darren “did I st..st..stutter” Woodson, Sean “I yell everything I say!!” Salisbury, and Shaun “I have no right to be criticizing QB play” King, among others. I won’t hate on all your co-workers though..Trey Wingo is the best host ESPN has..is he as nice & cool as he seems on TV?

    AK,

Yeah, you definitely can’t hate on everybody on the network. We are all different. But, I can’t be mad at somebody who thinks i’m good!

Trey is the coolest cat and has the biggest brain in the building. He is relevant to every subject and can talk his way out of anything. He truly is amazing and funny and witty. I truly love working with him and i’m so glad i get to work with him in my rookie year in this game.

As I got to learn from Bruce Smith in my first year playing pro football, I’m learning from Trey in pro broadcasting….I’m blessed!

Marcellus, I recall your pre-season picks had the Chargers winning the AFC West, the Cowboys winning the NFC, with the Jags winning the whole shebang. I bet you picked Columbia (0-5) to win the Ivy League too, huh? Care to change any of those picks now? (you homer, haha)

I appreciate the info big homie! lol… yea as i have been consistent with it, the Shin-splints have subsided, and my quality of running has improved. I did some moderate physiology, and found ways to tweak my running techniques as well as other areas. Main thing was I cut down on my saturated fat, no more pastrami-chili cheese fries. HOLLA!!! except for sunday’s once in a while. my objective is being firefighter, so my goals are the endurance and strength. appreciate the tid bits. keep up the good work on ESPN. Thanks for replying!!!

    Mike,

Calm down Mike….the season is not a sprint, but a marathon…
Who would’ve picked the Giants to win it all at this time last year? Maybe Pauly from the Jersey Shore, but he would of been alone on that one!
No thanks, I don’t want to change any of my picks, because they all can still come true……except Columbia winning the Ivy League, but of course I didn’t predict that one. I’m not that crazy, but we are getting better, if you can believe that, very competitive!!!! Hopefully we can win a game, so that i have some credibility on that one!!!!

    Juspeezy,

Glad you are feeling healthy…..and ain’t nothing wrong with pastrami chili cheese fries….if that’s the reason you were hurt….then stay injured!!!!!!

Marcellus, I hear that there are guys in the league that are gay. Is that true? Are there guys that people suspect are gay and are they treated any different? I saw a story about a guy that used to play for the Giants that was gay a wrote a book about other players that were he knew about. I was just wondering it this was true when you played.

I would like to understand how you could ever say that the Dallas Cowboys issues come from there strength and conditioning program? Joe Juraszek is the hardest working coach on the staff. He really cares about making his players the best they can be. This season many players who were recovering from injuries (such as broken arms and fingers)spent a lot of time with Joe and have now developed to be even stronger then before. He has worked with so many talented athletes, and they will only say how he has changed their lives for the better. All of the big name players respect his tough work ethic and would agree that he is the ” real deal” when it comes to conditioning programs.
When Emmit Smith was in his last years it was Joe Juraszek who coached him to have the strength as an old player to meet his goals the way he wanted to. He ended up exceeding his goals, which could never have happened if he hadnt been in the proper shape. I think that if the Chargers had a coach like Joe Juraszek then LT would probably be starting and not struggling as he begins to get older. Your comment couldnt have been more wrong, and has made many people question your knowledge? The Dallas COwboys are lacking strong coaches with leadership, and the only one that has those qualities is Joe Juraszek. I think that you owe him an apology, because his hard work should not be looked down apon. He is the best in the business for a reason and no one, not even your comments can put a negative dent on his excellent reputaion.

    Marcellus,

I love the website and the work you’ve done off the field since you’ve retired. I’m an entrepreneur myself and I think a great idea for retired athletes would be to create a venture capital/angel investment firm to invest in young entrepreneurs who have businesses involved with their sport. Who knows football equipment/clothing/weight training programs/etc. better than the players themselves? Not to mention you’d have instant appeal because of the star status involved with the company and you wouldn’t have to hire a pro athlete as a spokesperson because you already are one! You could raise funds from current and retired players and even play it off as a reality series if you wanted by having entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to you. Just a crazy idea I came up with…Your thoughts?
