Ketia Swanier

Former UCONN point guard and professional basketball player Ketia Swanier created the Ketia 4 Kidz Foundation, Incorporation on August 25, 2008.

Swanier, who was drafted in the 1st round by the Connecticut Sun with the 12th overall pick of the 2008 WNBA Draft, announced plans for her non-profit foundation at Fort Benning near her former hometown of Columbus, Georgia. As a lifelong military brat, she moved several times nationally and internationally and wanted to give back to military children. Swanier has aspirations of growing her foundation throughout military installations around the world. Her initial plan for the foundation will take her on a journey beginning with Fort Benning, Georgia and back to where she began playing sports at Fort Hood, Texas, at the age of 6 years old.

Swanier said, “Travels of basketball begin when I was living in Wuerzburg, Germany. My desire to give back to military children comes from years of travel and everything I have experienced and endured to accomplish my dreams.” Her parents would take her out of school for 10 days, with the support of the school to travel to Atlanta, Georgia to play for the Georgia Magic in the Georgia State AAU Tournament, so she could qualify for the Nationals. She would then return for the summer to play with the Magic for the Nationals. This would only be the beginning of what she realized would be the start of her path to reaching her dreams. “I also understand what military children are experiencing now, that we are fighting two wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; my parents both deployed numerous times.”

Swanier acknowledges her ultimate goal is to share her knowledge and experiences with military children so they not only have dreams, but they must believe in them.
