Chris Paul’s dedication to his community began long before he became an NBA Star. During the summer of 2005, Chris initiated a philanthropic campaign designed to highlight his dedication both to his grandfather’s spirit and to the Winston-Salem community that nurtured him from his days as a stand-out high school student-athlete to a national star at Wake Forest.
It was from this dedication Chris Paul and his family created the CP3 Foundation in partnership with The Winston-Salem Foundation to support charitable causes of great importance to them.
In 2005, these efforts included the refurbishment of basketball courts at the Rupert Bell Recreation Center in East Winston-Salem.
In 2006 and 2007, the CP3 Foundation hosted the inaugural and second-annual Chris Paul’s Winston-Salem Weekend, which combined has raised more than $200,000. The money generated by these events has, among other initiatives, established the Nathaniel Jones Scholarship Fund in memory of Chris’ late grandfather. This scholarship will enable a Forsyth County student to attend Wake Forest University.
In September 2006, Chris won the NBA’s Community Assist Award, which secured an additional $5,000 for the CP3 Foundation. The award acknowledges Paul’s emphasis on community involvement and service, including not just in Winston-Salem, but also his donation of food baskets and bikes for underprivileged children in Oklahoma City and New Orleans.
