Have you ever heard of the Alma Awards? Well, if you’re like I was, you answered that question with an emphatic, ‘no.’ However, after attending the Alma Awards for the first time on Sunday, let’s just say my calendar will be marked for this event for the next, oh … 70 years!
The Alma Awards are basically the Emmy Awards for the Latino community. So you know I was extremely excited to see who won Best Supporting Latino Male on daytime TV – SIKE. I was there for the same reason as the three other black males in attendance and well, every other male with a heart beat — Shakira! And yes, I saw her. She’s little, but she definitely uses her Bally’s card.
I also saw Jessica Alba, who has the best stature of any woman I’ve ever seen (like she went to congeniality school), Edward James Olmos from “American Me” (still one of the most gangsta movies ever), Charlie Sheen (who knew he was Latino?), and Cheech and Chong who performed together for the first time in 27 years.
Cheech and Chong were hilarious, saying that in 2008, they’re either going to go back on tour or running for president. They thought they could win because, “Cheech would get all the Latino votes and Chong would get all the stoner votes … that’s most of the country right there!” Funny.
I saw many, many other famous people, but the true stars were the background dancers (thankfully, my camera has great zoom). Wow, I’m definitely going to take salsa lessons, if for no other reason than to save face at next year’s after party. Let’s just say, my two-step didn’t cut it!
You know what though, I’m proud of myself. Trust me when I say that I was a Lone Ranger in this gun fight! I saw Luis Castillo from the San Diego Chargers there, but clearly we only shared a profession and not heritage! Uh … Wiley/Castillo.
But you know what, so what if I looked as out of place as Eminem at his first BET Awards. I see my attendance as a sign of unity in a city were blacks and browns have been warring at an alarming rate. Hey, it’s the least I could do. It’s no bother to show some cultural harmony while mingling with some of the most beautiful Latinas in the world and stumbling through my Spanish lessons from the 11th grade. I got an “A” back then, but boy, how much you forget when you don’t practice.
Surprisingly , everyone wanted to take pictures with me (football is huge!), and it was a fair exchange for those seven digits and email addresses I piled up. Gotta love it!
