Child Haven of Southern Nevada
701 N. Pecos Road
Las Vegas, NV, 89101
Child Haven is a part of the Clark County Department of Family Services (DFS) and provides temporary care and treatment for abused, neglected and abandoned children between 3 days to 17 years of age. Children are placed in protective custody in Child Haven by police or DFS workers. The Child Haven campus consists of eight cottages, and activity and school centers. Children are assigned to a cottage based on their age and sex. The cottages have a capacity of housing 12 children each, except for the infants cottage, which has a capacity for 20 infants.
Child Haven contracts with licensed shelter homes in the community. Licensed shelter homes provide children with qualified and quality one-on-one care in emergency situations.

WHAT DOES CHILD HAVEN DO FOR CHILDREN?
Child Haven provides care and protection to children placed in protective custody in an atmosphere that is as "home-like" as possible. Each cottage is a self-contained "home" and meals are prepared and served family-style in the cottage. Most children wear clothing provided by Child Haven. The treatment program, Child Haven Active Teaching Treatment Approach, (CHATTA), assists children with social or behavioral problems in learning appropriate behaviors. CHATTA also provides the basic structure that needs to exist in all homes for people to live together in harmony. Children are taught new skills based on their own treatment or behavioral needs, and this teaching is reinforced by the earning of positive and negative points. The points are then used for special privileges. Each child has an assigned cottage staff person to act as his or her personal counselor and advocate.
CHILD HAVEN PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING PROGRAMS
*SCHOOL – School-age children attend classes daily in the three-room school house operated by the Clark County School District. Instruction is individualized, and the teacher/student ratio is low. Some children are bused to their home school each day from Child Haven. Preschool children participate in a preschool program each day.
*MEDICAL CARE – Nurses are on staff at Child Haven and provide an examination of each child placed at Child Haven, and provide medical supervision during the child's stay. If needed, children are seen by a physician.
*ARTS & CRAFTS – Our foster grandparents operate an arts and crafts program daily. Children learn new skills and the satisfaction of a job well done in craft activities appropriate to their age and interests.
*RECREATION – Physical exercise is important to the healthy development of young bodies, and sports and outdoor activities are regularly scheduled for the children. Softball, kickball, volleyball and basketball are among the many physical activities scheduled. Off-campus outings include swimming, skating and trips to local parks and Lake Mead.
*SOCIAL & CULTURAL EVENTS – Efforts are made to enrich the lives of the Child Haven residents. Our children attend such events as plays, the ballet, professional sporting events and shows.
FOR PARENTS
The time away from home is a difficult one for both the parent and the child. Visiting is encouraged.
The parents of infants and toddlers are invited to participate in COPE, the Child Haven Offers Parenting Education. Parents of older children can learn the same skills that the child developmental specialists use to manage and improve children's behavior, through the Common Sense Parenting Program. Inquiries about these programs can be made through the cottage supervisors.
Unless there is a court order to the contrary, all parents are encouraged to visit and telephone their children regularly. Child development staff will always take the time to discuss a child's adjustment with the parent.
