Jorge Posada

The Jorge Posada Foundation's Heroes for Hope Gala raises awareness of Craniosynostosis. Craniosynostosis is a congenital or birth defect, characterized by the premature closure of one or more sutures, which causes an abnormally shaped skull. The skull is normally composed of bones that are separated by sutures. As an infant's brain grows, open sutures allows the bones to expand and develop a relatively normal head shape. When one or more sutures close early, it can cause the skull to expand in the direction of less resistance. This often results in an abnormal head shape and in severe cases, places excessive and damaging amounts of pressure on a growing brain causing neurological damage to the brain tissue.

The Foundation aims to provide financial assistance to families with children affected by this condition and offer them emotional support through its Mentors Program. The organization partners with a number of medical centers, helping underwrite a portion of the costs of initial surgeries. The Foundation also strives to create awareness through events and through funding other educational outreach efforts.

This year's recipient of the "Heroes for Hope Award" will be Mr. George M. Steinbrenner III. The event will feature Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos as Masters of Ceremonies, as well as a performance by Kat de Luna.
