Our mission is two-fold, to create a first class event for hundreds of sports fans who come to Fargo from across the United States, and to raise money (over $1,310,000 so far) for thousands of people in our community who benefit from Hospice, the Roger Maris Cancer Center and Shanley. We are very grateful to the area businesses, volunteers and contributors for supporting this event with so much dedication.
The 26th annual Roger Maris Celebrity Benefit Golf Tournament will be held June 27-29, 2009, at Edgewood Golf Course, Fargo, N.D. A sports auction, featuring hundreds of items from baseball and other sports, will be held June 27 from 2pm – 4:30pm, at Centennial Hall (Civic Center). The tournament’s banquet will be on Sunday evening, at the Great Hall of the Holiday Inn.
The tournament is an 18-hole, six-member team scramble with a shotgun start. Cost to participate is $250 per person, and teams may elect to play with a celebrity without an additional charge. The first session is scheduled for Sunday morning, June 28, with two additional rounds to be played on Monday, June 29. A total of 26 teams will participate in each session. The tournament is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
The event is a rain or shine tournament and no refunds will be given.
Past participants will be mailed pre-registration forms about April 1. For interested first-time golfers, please contact the tournament for necessary application forms. The tournament often sells out weeks before the event, so golfers are urged to return their completed pre-registration materials early.
In its first quarter century the tournament has raised over $1,310,000 for beneficiaries Hospice of the Red River Valley, Fargo Shanley High School (Roger’s alma mater) and the MeritCare Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, ND.
Established in 1984 as a fund-raiser for Shanley High School, the initial event included celebrities Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Bill “Moose” Skowron, Ken Hunt and Bob Allison. Through the years, the tournament developed a reputation as one of the region’s premiere events and has attracted dozens of stars from the sports and entertainment worlds, including several members of baseball, football, basketball and hockey Halls of Fame.
A Special Event for 2009
A Roger Maris Benefit pre-party event will be held at the Fargo Theater at 6pm Saturday, followed by a viewing of the movie 61*. Sportscaster Bob Costas, actor/director Billy Crystal, producer Ross Greenburg and several stars from the movie will be on hand to answer questions from the audience. An autographed item from the movie will be auctioned off. Tickets for the theater event are $61, and will be available at the Fargo Theater box office from June 1-12.
